A dental crown will restore your smile and functionality.

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is like a cap that covers an existing tooth. It fits snugly over the tooth to restore its appearance and can provide a variety of solutions to common dental issues. These include:
• Support or strengthen broken teeth or a single broken tooth
• Restore the appearance of a tooth including size, length and colour
• Complete a dental implant
• Support a dental bridge to replace missing teeth
• Protect worn or damaged teeth

The benefits of dental crowns

Custom-made for you
As a new crown fits closely to the gum line, it creates a natural-looking replacement tooth that enables you to smile, talk and laugh with confidence.

A durable and long-lasting solution
A dental crown can last up to 10 years or more, depending on the material it is made from and how well it is cared for. It acts like a natural tooth and is a long-lasting way to restore the appearance of your smile.

A healthy smile
With good oral hygiene, your dental crown can protect your existing tooth from further damage or decay and prevent any discomfort from sensitivity.

    Frequently asked questions

The lifespan of a dental crown is around 10 years or more if good oral hygiene is maintained. This includes regular, careful brushing and flossing around the crown. Keeping up with regular dental checkups and hygiene appointments can prevent any issues before they arise and prolong the lifespan of your crowns.

Your dentist will start by taking x-rays of the tooth to determine whether there is any extensive decay to the tooth or surrounding teeth. A root canal treatment may be needed first if there is a risk of infection. The prepared tooth and surrounding gum is numbed with local anaesthetic and then the dentist will begin to build up and shape the crown to your tooth. Impressions of the tooth are made and sent to our on-site lab where we will produce the crown.

To survive the enormous forces of biting and chewing, all crowns and bridges need to be incredibly strong. This means they need to have a high-strength core material. Conventional ‘metal crowns’ have a cast metal core, but the very latest hi-tech crowns and bridges have a CAD/CAM-designed zirconia core. These fit more accurately and because they are tooth-coloured all the way through they look more natural, too.

On top of the core material, we build the crown up in different layers of porcelain. By doing so we can incorporate different colours and other internal characterisations. These can include areas of opacity or translucency and even fluorescence. This porcelain is baked onto the core material.

Finally, we finish the crown or bridge by ‘glazing’ it with a layer of translucent porcelain. At this point we can also add surface staining for an even better result. When a complex colour match is required we sometimes do this with our patient present for the best result possible.

We can make any crown look exactly like your natural teeth. Our skilled technicians meet you in person to get the right colour match. It is this attention to detail and patient care that really makes all the difference, and it’s amazing what we can do for you.

Our shade-taking service sometimes involves digital shade-taking and photography.

We are based on the outskirts of Leeds city centre and are easily accessible by car or public transport. You can find us at: Swallow House, 349 Tong Road, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS12 4QG.
